How to add page numbers to a PDF
Page numbering places a visible label on each sheet. It helps a reader follow a document, but it does not reorder sheets or change the original contents into a new sequence.
Understand the task first
Choose where the number should appear and the number on the first page. The next pages increase by one. In this tool, the start number applies to the first physical page; it is not a “skip cover page” setting.
A small worked example
Four pages starting from 5: page 1 shows 5; page 2 shows 6; page 3 shows 7; page 4 shows 8. Final label = start number + page count − 1 = 5 + 4 − 1 = 8.
Follow these steps
Prepare an unnumbered copy
Keep the original. Inspect margins to find a clear location. If page numbers already exist, this tool adds new ones; it does not erase the old ones.
Choose a clear position
Select Bottom center, Bottom right, Bottom left or Top center. Check whether the selected area contains a footer, drawing border or other important content.
Set the first number
For a four-page continuation beginning at 5, enter 5. The visible sequence will be 5, 6, 7, 8. It still contains four physical pages.
Create and download the numbered PDF
Run Add page numbers after the local file check finishes. Download the new file rather than assuming the original on your computer has changed.
Inspect every page
Check the first and last labels and then all pages, especially rotated pages or mixed page sizes. Confirm no label covers important text. Keep the original if the result needs another position.

The labels are 7, 8, 9. Count the first page as 7, not as an extra increment: 7 + 3 − 1 = 9.
Avoid the common trap
Entering 2 as the start number does not leave the cover blank. Numbering again can put duplicate labels on the same page. Reordering after numbering can leave printed numbers out of sequence.
When this method applies — and when it does not
The current tool numbers every physical page and adds visible text. It does not offer automatic cover exclusion or replace a PDF viewer’s internal page-label system. Work locally and review the output before distribution.
