Learn: Moment equilibrium check — three moments

Equilibrium means there is no unbalanced moment in the component being checked. This lesson adds three signed contributions and reports the residual; it does not silently assume that the data already balance.

01

What the formula is saying

Choose one positive direction before writing numbers. Terms in the opposite direction are negative, so summing the algebraic values shows whether they cancel.

ΣM = M₁ + M₂ + M₃ = 0

Read the symbols in plain language

M₁
Moment 1 (+/−)

Moment 1 (+/−). Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

N·m

Use N·m as the base unit shown here. All three inputs use N·m. Moments must refer to the same point or axis; forces must be components along the same chosen axis. The answer retains the input unit.

M₂
Moment 2 (+/−)

Moment 2 (+/−). Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

N·m

Use N·m as the base unit shown here. All three inputs use N·m. Moments must refer to the same point or axis; forces must be components along the same chosen axis. The answer retains the input unit.

M₃
Moment 3 (+/−)

Moment 3 (+/−). The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

N·m

Use N·m as the base unit shown here. All three inputs use N·m. Moments must refer to the same point or axis; forces must be components along the same chosen axis. The answer retains the input unit.

Result to find

Moment equilibrium check — three moments. The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

N·m

Sort out the units first

All three inputs use N·m. Moments must refer to the same point or axis; forces must be components along the same chosen axis. The answer retains the input unit.

Assumptions before calculating

Include every external contribution relevant to this component and use one consistent sign convention. Three inputs may each represent a subtotal when more than three loads act.

02

Let’s solve one together

Read the given values, follow each operation, then check what the result means.

Read the supplied values as one complete study case. Find ΣM and explain the result in the stated output unit.

M₁ · Moment 1 (+/−)
100 N·m
M₂ · Moment 2 (+/−)
-60 N·m
M₃ · Moment 3 (+/−)
-40 N·m
  1. Add the first two signed terms

Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

    (100) + (-60) = 40 N·m
  2. Find the final residual

The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

    (40) + (-40) = 0 N·m
Answer0 N·m

Does this worked answer make sense?

Zero means this component balances. A positive residual requires an equal negative balancing contribution; a negative residual requires the opposite.

A second worked example — different values

A second case uses different data. Predict which way the answer will change, then calculate it without reusing the first answer.

M₁ · Moment 1 (+/−)
120 N·m
M₂ · Moment 2 (+/−)
-50 N·m
M₃ · Moment 3 (+/−)
-60 N·m
  1. Add the first two signed terms

Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

    (120) + (-50) = 70 N·m
  2. Find the final residual

The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

    (70) + (-60) = 10 N·m
Answer10 N·m

Now try your own values

Change a value or its unit. The same method will show your calculation, step by step.

Moment 1 (+/−). Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

Moment 2 (+/−). Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

Moment 3 (+/−). The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

English, Arabic and Persian digits are supported. The steps convert inputs to the formula’s base units.

Results update only when you calculate. The lesson example above stays unchanged.

Your turn — check your understanding

Solve this separate case yourself. Use only the values below; the two worked examples use different data. Give the requested result in the selected unit.

M₁ · Moment 1 (+/−)
200 N·m
M₂ · Moment 2 (+/−)
-120 N·m
M₃ · Moment 3 (+/−)
-50 N·m

Find: Learn: Moment equilibrium check — three moments

For repeating decimals, use at least four significant figures. Accepted rounding tolerance: 0.05% of the expected value; zero uses an absolute tolerance of 10⁻¹².

A hint, not the answer

Choose one positive direction before writing numbers. Terms in the opposite direction are negative, so summing the algebraic values shows whether they cancel.

All three inputs use N·m. Moments must refer to the same point or axis; forces must be components along the same chosen axis. The answer retains the input unit.

Show the full practice solution

Compare the steps with your work; revealing a solution does not mark the lesson complete.

  1. Add the first two signed terms

Opposing signs subtract naturally; keep the chosen direction throughout.

    (200) + (-120) = 80 N·m
  2. Find the final residual

The remaining algebraic sum is zero only when this equilibrium component balances.

    (80) + (-50) = 30 N·m
Answer30 N·m

Avoid the common trap

Do not add magnitudes and expect cancellation. Do not mix force and moment units, and do not declare the whole structure in equilibrium after checking only one component.

When this method applies — and when it does not

A zero result verifies only this one equation. A planar rigid body also needs the other independent force and moment equations; dynamics requires acceleration and inertia rather than a zero residual.

For study and understanding, not approval of a real structure, site operation or design. Apply the correct standard, National Annex and professional review to actual engineering work.

Reading focus: Moment equilibrium check — three moments. Use the relevant elastic-response, equilibrium, constitutive-relations or shear-and-torsion module; the lesson states its particular sign convention.

Lesson updated: · Both examples and the separate practice case are checked against an independent high-precision numerical implementation. This verifies arithmetic for the stated model, not engineering certification.
