How to calculate rectangle area

Area counts how many square units cover a flat surface. A rectangle 5 m long and 3 m wide can be thought of as five rows of three 1 m² squares.

What the formula is saying

Multiply the number of units along the length by the number across the width. This counts all squares in the rectangular grid.

A = L × W

Sort out the units first

Use matching length units. m × m = m². If width is 300 cm, convert it to 3 m before multiplying by a length in metres.

02

Let’s solve one together

Read the given values, follow each operation, then check what the result means.

L · Length
5 m
W · Width
3 m
  1. Count the width of each row

With one-metre-long rows, each row has W square metres.

    (3) = 3 m
  2. Multiply by the number of rows

Length times width counts the entire rectangular surface.

    (5) × (3) = 15 m²
Answer15 m²

Does this worked answer make sense?

The 5 by 3 example has area 15 m², while its perimeter is 16 m. The different units help keep these separate.

03

Now try your own values

Change a value or its unit. The same method will show your calculation, step by step.

English, Arabic and Persian digits are supported. The steps convert inputs to the formula’s base units.

Results update only when you calculate. The lesson example above stays unchanged.

04

Your turn — check your understanding

Use these new values. Work it out first, then check your answer.

L · Length
8 m
W · Width
4 m

Find: rectangle area

For repeating decimals, use at least four significant figures. Accepted rounding tolerance: 0.05% of the expected value; zero uses an absolute tolerance of 10⁻¹².

A hint, not the answer

Multiply the number of units along the length by the number across the width. This counts all squares in the rectangular grid.

Use matching length units. m × m = m². If width is 300 cm, convert it to 3 m before multiplying by a length in metres.

  1. Count the width of each row

With one-metre-long rows, each row has W square metres.

    (4) = 4 m
  2. Multiply by the number of rows

Length times width counts the entire rectangular surface.

    (8) × (4) = 32 m²
Answer32 m²

Avoid the common trap

2(L + W) is perimeter, not area. Adding a third dimension changes the task from area to volume.

When this method applies — and when it does not

Flat rectangle with positive perpendicular side lengths. For an irregular outline, split it into suitable shapes rather than forcing this formula.
